I first heard of Gary V. a couple years ago while I was in college. I was an econ major who was minoring in Marketing, and I had a friend recommend to me Gary’s book called “Crushing It” or something like that.
I started reading it, and once I got to about the halfway mark I was thinking: “All he’s saying is common sense shit that I, and a bunch of other young people, already know pretty damn well.” How? We also knew how to use social media.
Look don’t get me wrong, the guy isn’t stupid. I mean he’s a very wealthy man so he can’t be that dumb. But in my opinion, he was just very lucky.
I think the only reason he’s the big media guy right now, is because he was the first OLDER guy that knew how to use social media. Not even necessarily know how to use it, but he just knew it was better for a buiness to use it then not.
Nothing he was saying or preaching in regards to business was something most young business minded people didn't already know, but it something old people didn't know about at the time.
Which by the way, is like one of the most frustrating things in the world to me. Like the only reason I minored in marketing at the time, was because I figured that in the industry I was working in at the time, marketing was my key to becoming a CEO eventually. But then I started like actually seeing how stupid most managers and CEO’s are now, and that ruined my hunger for striving to become a CEO.
